More than twenty years ago, New Jersey lawmakers passed legislation offering consumers a wider choice of electricity and natural gas options by creating the retail electric and natural gas markets and eliminating the monopoly held by the big utilities.
But the intent of the legislation was never realized. In the decades since, few New Jersey residents have exercised their right to choose, which has impeded efficiency, service, transparency, and product innovation.
New Jersey ratepayers deserve to choose a provider that suits their lifestyle and budget. That’s why the Choose Who You Use coalition was founded. We advocate for reforms that benefit all electricity and natural gas consumers:
RENEWABLE
Renewable solutions are essential to help New Jersey meet its ambitious climate goals. The retail energy industry offers a range of products that can help consumers embrace energy efficiency, reduce their carbon footprint and costs, and assist the state in meeting its climate goals.
INNOVATION
Competitive suppliers innovate with technology in ways big utilities do not – on things like carbon offsets, Virtual Power Plants (“VPP’s”), energy storage, smart thermostats, and time-of-use plans – things that can reduce our energy consumption.
PRESERVE COMPETITION
Competition means more choices for consumers. From renewable energy options to innovative plans, consumers deserve to shop for options to meet their needs.
We should protect and increase choices for consumers, not take them away. We should give big utilities more competition, not a monopoly.
